Jack of all Trades, Master of NONE.

Theres a saying, "Jack of all trades, master of none."

And then there's the full version "Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one."

Here's my hot take. To be a true Jack of all trades you actually have to be a Master of ONE. The most VALUABLE one.

Let me explain.

I have been a Jack of all trades all my life. I can learn a new skill quickly, pick up new techniques just by watching and retain it long term.

I've realized that theres a "trick" to every skill and once you discover it, its like a light switch, 'Click', and then it's just a matter of practice and refinement. You may not become an "Expert" in that one skill but that skill becomes another weapon in your arsenal.

So what is this One Skill that rules them all?

It is the simple skill of 'Problem Solving.'

In my professional career, I have elevated this skill of 'problem solving' by studying and implementing the universal principles of design; aka 'Creative' problem solving.

Designers are Creative Generalists.

We pull inspiration from everything and the more awareness we have, the wider and deeper the pool of references we get to pull from.

But thats not all, even if we have previous experience in a particular field, we like to start as if we didn't.

Which may seem contradictory, but one of the most important principles of design is to start a project with a fresh perspective and let primary research drive the design direction.

Design and development is expensive, chaotic and messy. Creativity is never a linear path, so how do we solve problems efficiently?

We utilize the DESIGN PROCESS.

The Design Process consists of 3 phases - Research, Ideation, and Testing. It's a perpetual back an forth, always starting with Research, until a desired outcome is reached.

We study, we explore, we experiment, we fail, we learn, come up with new ideas, test those ideas, gather insights, refine, refine, refine…

To do an effective job of creating something novel, you have to let the discoveries along the way lead you to the optimal solution, instead of letting your personal bias get in the way.

This is the power that the skill of Creative Problem Solving gives us.

"Knowing what to do when you don't know what to do."

The ability to fail fast and fail forward.

And in the process you learn new skills, new systems, new trades to utilize on your next project.
